The View From the Road

The View From the Road is a collection of paintings, watercolor, pastel and water-mixable oils, that are focused on representing views of the American West. The scenes are easily visible without needing to leave major arteries of travel; all were within a few hundred yards of the car if not taken directly from the car. The hope is to encourage people to get out and explore the beautiful landscapes in their own “backyards”. Views that can be experienced by those who are physically unable to make long arduous hikes. These views made such an impact on previous generations that it was deemed important enough to make an effort to make them accessible to the public as a part of the American identity of large and dramatic spaces. These are some of the scenes that Americans should be picturing when they imagine “America the beautiful.” The majority of the artworks in this exhibit are painted with water-mixable oils using thin layers of glazing and scumbling to create a field of loose marks made up of multiple bold colors that optically mix into more naturalistic tones. Those loose marks, when viewed from a distance, resolve into focus.

Chief Joseph Highway, found in Wyoming, as seen from the scenic overlook. Painted on canvas with water-mixable oils, this painting is part of The View From the Road collection, which documents a trip through parts of Utah, Wyoming, Colorado, Montana, and South Dakota.

J.Y.
